Brookline
The Brookline Housing Authority owns and operates 13 developments for low-income families and seniors with a total of 956 apartments, administers several state- and federally-funded housing and rental assistance programs for income eligible families, seniors and/or disabled individuals. The BHA also administers 1,113 state and federal rental vouchers, and partners with other government agencies and non-profit organizations to provide specialized housing to families and individuals.
Founded in 1980, the Brookline Community Development Corporation has a mission of building, renovating and operating affordable housing for the people who live in the Town of Brookline. BIC presently owns two buildings (22 units), and has participated in the sale of many affordable housing properties in Brookline. As BIC celebrates its 40th birthday this year, it is in the process of developing a Strategic Plan for the next five years. In it, BIC will play an increasingly important and active role in expanding community engagement and increasing affordable housing opportunities in Brookline. One board member’s motto is “40 units in four years.”
The Greater Boston Interfaith Organization (GBIO) is a broad-based, non-partisan, interfaith, multiracial organization rooted in greater Boston’s neighborhoods and congregations. In November 2022, GBIO and GBIO/Brookline launched a statewide Housing Justice Campaign to accomplish four goals:
-
- Greatly increase the amount of operating and capital funding for MA 43000 of state owned public housing, which have been woefully underfunded for decades
- Pass the real estate transfer fee to support municipalities’ Housing Trust Fund;
- Locally adopt the MBTA Act;
- Improve access to housing for people who reenter from incarceration, and for people with mental health issues.
