Housing Production Plan (HPP)
Brookline’s new HPP assesses the growing needs of our residents by building on our first 5 year Housing Production Plan, completed in 2016.
After adopting the original HPP in 2016, some recommendations for producing the additional low-, moderate-, and market-rate housing were implemented, but many recommendations have yet to be addressed.
Since then our housing challenges have only increased. So, in the Fall of 2020, Brookline for Everyone members introduced and strongly supported Warrant Article 34, calling for an updated HPP to create a new blueprint for how to address Brookline’s critical housing needs.
On November 30, 2022, after two years of work, including a comprehensive community engagement process, the Town’s consultant Judi Barrett (of the Barrett Planning Group) presented a detailed slide deck to the HAB with the first look at the updated HPP. It included a summary of the status of the Town’s affordable housing stock, with detailed recommendations for future action, including prototypes using specific sites in Brookline as examples of where we can change zoning to allow more housing. The plan was finally approved by the Select Board on February 22, 2024.
