About Town Meeting
Made up of 255 members elected from 17 precincts, along withBrookline's State Representative, the Select Board, the Town Moderator and the Town Administrator, Town Meeting is Brookline's legislative body.
New England towns evolved their system of Representative Town Government to achieve direct, deliberative democracy. As the largest town in Massachusetts, Brookline elects 15 Town Meeting members from each of its 17 precincts to make up its 255 member legislative body. They meet twice a year, in May and November, to vote on Warrant Articles, or pieces of legislation, published in the Town Warrant. Town Meeting Members serve for staggered 3-year terms, so that 5 members are elected from each precinct every year in the May annual town election.
